2019 High-End Audio Buyer’s Guide: DACs

DAC Reviews. When I was growing up my father spoke to me about the danger of hyperbole — I was 11 or 12 years old at time. I bring it up because that moment popped into my consciousness again as I was transcribing the listening notes from my time with the Audio Note DAC 5 Special.

The ability to present the 3D-image of a recorded vocalist like Frank Sinatra in a startlingly realistic spatial and timbral manner was one of many initial sonic impressions of the LampizatOr Pacific Balanced DAC that, like harshly-lit craters on the lunar surface when viewed at night from Earth, stood out in bold relief to me compared to other DACs I am familiar with.

Chord Qutest DAC review. Expectations can be a tricky thing. I usually fall somewhere in the middle, but when it was time to write the review of the totaldac d1-direct which sprang forth from the mind of French high-fidelity electronics guru Vincent Brient, I must say I had some serious expectations.

The LampizatOr Pacific DAC makes you forget completely about the fact that it is reproducing the recorded event and unconsciously allows one to be utterly engaged in the music playing.

Chord Qutest DAC preview. Aqua La Voce S3 Discrete arrival. Musicality, resolution and realistic timbre to instruments seems to be the overarching focus of the engineering behind the proprietary FPGA-based digital decoding with no digital filtering and the discrete R2R ladder DAC design the newly-upgraded S3 now sports.

As an audio reviewer, there are times I find it necessary to pull back from over-analyzing the sound of a product and get back to the fundamentals that drew me into this hobby in the first place. Engaging musicality can often be lost to one that is focusing on specifics such as soundstage, bass, dynamics, and resolution. Imagine your uncle Bob comes over unannounced and before he rings the bell, your doorbell rings.

That's not right. That's not natural. Filter 2 provides better high-frequency response but its Fast Roll-off Minimum Phase filter lets in some post-ringing.

Filter 3 is Bob's your uncle. Here's what I said about that, " I am meaningfully delighted, over and over again. All rights reserved. Create new account Request new password. Leave this field blank. Music Albums of the Year.Skip to main content Audio Dacs.

That said, I was unwilling to compromise one bit of sound quality for this convenience.

I love my speakers but I am required to use my headphones most of the time kids sleep! There were a couple of cheaper options but I liked the looks of this thing and the reviews I found on I used to have an option out of my Directv STB, but that has been replaced.

This little device plugged right in to my optical output on back of tv and gets power from a USB port on back of TV as well. I am using a tiny Bluetooth transmitter to then connect to my Bluetooth headphones. Note: the headphone jack on the back of my TV is not independent of my speakers, it's either both or none. Great product no hiss or noise even at low levels. Please note that your patch wires WILL make a difference Only 10 left in stock - order soon.

AV Receivers.Doing our best to not look too interested in a DAC or some file-based accoutrement at a show or hi-fi shop. Usually failing. I exaggerate because this hobby tends to extremes and exaggerations and that is, obviously, not always the case, as many of the best DACs or preamps, speakers, turntables, etc.

But, it is no stretch to say that as you climb the ladder of quality for digital hardware, the audible returns can exponentially increase, most often this happens on the separates side. Audiophiles as a whole tend to lust the most after those manufacturers whose wares creep into the four or five-digit price range. Does that make this lust wrong, or is this perfectionist audio pursuit flawed because of ever more expensive gear?

It is also my experience that sonic differences between DACs — even in the same price range — for high-fidelity playback can easily be as drastic as the results of swapping phono cartridges on a turntable. Which is why it can be just as difficult to settle on a digital front end as it is an analog one. But, it is this access, this exposure to the upper echelons of audiophiledom that got me thinking about ringing the bell for these DACs again to begin with. These are DACs that helped both change and shape my critical and musical opinions and observations when it comes to digital-audio over the last couple years and it is my hope that if you seek any of them out to spend your valuable time with, that they will have as positive and as deep an impact on your understanding of binary music playback as they have mine.

Listed alphabetically with some descriptions lifted from previous frantic scratchings and repurposed here because, to be honest, good prose should be re-used when possible and if appliciable. Add the ones you think should be must-listen-to choices in the comments section. I look forward to hearing from readers. That simplicity, that purposefulness, that focus on doing one type of file format and doing it to the very best of one's ability, is to me, special.

It has adjustable output 2V or 6V, preference is yoursbalanced and unbalanced outputs, and a full-spec MQA decoder along with multi-stage power regulation. Having gotten exceedingly familiar with the dCS sound, I can say without pretense that it is a standout among heavyweight DACs I've heard. Fair warning: Acquiring a dCS Rossini puts one in peril of physically succumbing to the heartache, melancholy and rapturous beauty that the best recorded musical events are suffused with.

The ability to present the 3D-image of a recorded vocalist like Frank Sinatra in a startlingly realistic spatial and timbral manner was one of many sonic impressions that, like harshly-lit craters on the lunar surface when viewed from the Earth at night, helps the Pacific stand out in bold relief when compared to the presentation of other DACs I am familiar with. The output voltage signal of the Pacific is 3V pp adjustable by requestbut in my unit with volume control it is preset to 6V pp.

What matters most to the Pacific seems to be what the binary-obsessed in us all covet more than anthing when it comes to our bits: that they sound analog. This is an apt way to sum up the Naim house sound to me and their flagship network player and DAC epitomizes this visceral musical presentation perfectly. No matter what was played, the system never revealed a weak link, which would have stood out like a sore thumb. It also features 13 Naim DR regulaters for clean DC, a suspended sub-chassis and a completely separate housing for the toroidal power supply.

To say I want this in for a full review is an understatement.

More alchemy by candlelight in their build than fluorescent lights and sterile laboratory to my mind, I sometimes wish I could be ignorant of the electronic machinations occurring within that is turning digital bits into analog waves. Summarized more as physical musical instrument or organic entity which I imbue with human traits, than a processor and translator of binary information: a silver box traversing this mortal coil if you will.

The core of the totaldac designs is the R2R ladder itself, which in the case of the d1-direct contains hand-matched 0.

Utilizing the aforementioned custom DAC technology developed in-house for conversion and a custom FPGA Field Programmable Gate Array for processing, along with proprietary anti-jitter clock, output stage and massive copper-plate chassis damping, Brient wraps it all up within an unique trapezoidal-shaped enclosure to ensure totaldac designs look like no other. This is a DAC capable of striking that rare balance of lifelike playback between silicon-based hardware and carbon-based musicians.A good digital-to-analog converter or DAC can make all the difference when listening to music, especially through headphones.

We've talked about why they're so great, and how to choose a good one before, but this week we're looking at five of the best, based on your nominations. Earlier in the week, we asked you to tell us which DACs you thought were the best. Not just the outright best in audio quality, or the highest-end, but the best for consumers looking for great audio quality for their money, and a solid listening experience in their headphones.

We tallied up your votes, and while no five best anything audio list can possibly settle all rivalies, here's what you said. The poll is closed and the votes are counted! There you can read the results and discuss the winner! It's on the higher end of Fiio's DAC models, but it comes with interchangeable adapters so you can plug in different audio inputs, and almost all of the unit's features can be accessed and managed using the LCD display, so you don't have a ton of dials and knobs: just a thin, sleek piece of metal that can travel with you anywhere you go.

It's not a perfect model some people say the controls and menus are finicky, and even at its price point you could probably find better for a few bucks morebut it's a great and affordable USB DAC with Amp nonetheless. The Xonar Essence One for example sports a built-in amplifier, signal to noise above and beyond other DACs in its class, and a dedicated internal power supply, so you don't have to plug it into a brick or try to power it over USB.

Schiit doesn't mess around. Just read through their FAQ pageand specifically their FAQs on the Bifrost —they're serious about audio, and they don't pull punches. Just as well—The Bifrost is a powerhouse. It's actually an upgradable DAC that you can pair with other Schiit audio gear, like their amplifiers.

The unit is modular and customizable, so you can get one with or without a USB input card, or upgrade the onboard USB to their Gen2 card. You can even select the volatge, plug types, and analog stage when you order.

They're actually remarkably small, and look a bit like art when sitting on your desk. Behind its simple, minimalist design and glowing vacuum tubes, thus the name "fireflies," is an audiophile friendly system. It's available direct from WooAudio, and there are more than a few happy owners over at Head-Fi.

Now that you've seen the top five, it's time to put them to a vote to determine the Lifehacker community favorite! Have something to say about one of the contenders?

A DAC, or Digital to Analogue Converter, is a unit which converts a digital audio signal, such as that from a CD player, television or computer, into an analogue one for connection to a standard amplifier. Although these are built into nearly all audio equipment, a separate, dedicated unit improves sound quality emphatically. There are several DAC architectures ; the suitability of a DAC for a particular application is determined by figures of merit including: resolutionmaximum sampling frequency and others. Digital-to-analog conversion can degrade a signal, so a DAC should be specified that has insignificant errors in terms of the application.

DACs are commonly used in music players to convert digital data streams into analog audio signals. They are also used in televisions and mobile phones to convert digital video data into analog video signals which connect to the screen drivers to display monochrome or color images. The audio DAC is a low-frequency, high-resolution type while the video DAC is a high-frequency low- to medium-resolution type. Due to the complexity and the need for precisely matched componentsall but the most specialized DACs are implemented as integrated circuits ICs.

These typically take the form of metal—oxide—semiconductor MOS mixed-signal integrated circuit chips that integrate both analog and digital circuits. Discrete DACs circuits constructed from multiple discrete electronic components instead of a packaged IC would typically be extremely high-speed low-resolution power-hungry types, as used in military radar systems.

Very high-speed test equipment, especially sampling oscilloscopesmay also use discrete DACs. A DAC converts an abstract finite-precision number usually a fixed-point binary number into a physical quantity e. In particular, DACs are often used to convert finite-precision time series data to a continually varying physical signal.

An ideal DAC converts the abstract numbers into a conceptual sequence of impulses that are then processed by a reconstruction filter using some form of interpolation to fill in data between the impulses. A conventional practical DAC converts the numbers into a piecewise constant function made up of a sequence of rectangular functions that is modeled with the zero-order hold. Other DAC methods such as those based on delta-sigma modulation produce a pulse-density modulated output that can be similarly filtered to produce a smoothly varying signal.

As per the Nyquist—Shannon sampling theorema DAC can reconstruct the original signal from the sampled data provided that its bandwidth meets certain requirements e. Digital sampling introduces quantization error that manifests as low-level noise in the reconstructed signal. DACs and ADCs are part of an enabling technology that has contributed greatly to the digital revolution.

To illustrate, consider a typical long-distance telephone call. The caller's voice is converted into an analog electrical signal by a microphonethen the analog signal is converted to a digital stream by an ADC. The digital stream is then divided into network packets where it may be sent along with other digital datanot necessarily audio.

The packets are then received at the destination, but each packet may take a completely different route and may not even arrive at the destination in the correct time order.

The digital voice data is then extracted from the packets and assembled into a digital data stream. A DAC converts this back into an analog electrical signal, which drives an audio amplifierwhich in turn drives a loudspeakerwhich finally produces sound.

Most modern audio signals are stored in digital form for example MP3s and CDs and, in order to be heard through speakers, they must be converted into an analog signal. Specialist standalone DACs can also be found in high-end hi-fi systems. These normally take the digital output of a compatible CD player or dedicated transport which is basically a CD player with no internal DAC and convert the signal into an analog line-level output that can then be fed into an amplifier to drive speakers.

Similar digital-to-analog converters can be found in digital speakers such as USB speakers, and in sound cards. In voice over IP applications, the source must first be digitized for transmission, so it undergoes conversion via an ADC and is then reconstructed into analog using a DAC on the receiving party's end. Video sampling tends to work on a completely different scale altogether thanks to the highly nonlinear response both of cathode ray tubes for which the vast majority of digital video foundation work was targeted and the human eye, using a "gamma curve" to provide an appearance of evenly distributed brightness steps across the display's full dynamic range - hence the need to use RAMDACs in computer video applications with deep enough color resolution to make engineering a hardcoded value into the DAC for each output level of each channel impractical e.

Given this inherent distortion, it is not unusual for a television or video projector to truthfully claim a linear contrast ratio difference between darkest and brightest output levels of or greater, equivalent to 10 bits of audio precision even though it may only accept signals with 8-bit precision and use an LCD panel that only represents 6 or 7 bits per channel.

Video signals from a digital source, such as a computer, must be converted to analog form if they are to be displayed on an analog monitor.
